Solar is changing water delivery from a costly, vulnerable service into a cleaner, more reliable utility and SmartCloud Solar is proving it with real projects on the ground.
In Kikuyu (Ondiri), we installed a 246 kWp hybrid solar PV system designed to optimize energy efficiency and reduce operational costs for water pumping. Commissioned 19 April 2023, the ground-mounted EPC installation now supplies reliable daytime power and cuts dependence on the grid for Kikuyu Water Company Limited.
Additionally, In Naivasha, a 1.23 MWp grid-tie plant, financed via a 12-year PPA, now supports Naivasha’s water and sanitation services, stabilizing energy budgets and improving service reliability.
Why does it matter? Solar brings predictable energy costs, fewer outages, lower maintenance than diesel alternatives, and big emissions reductions. Through SmartCloud Solar’s mixed financing, the outright purchase, PPA, and lease-to-own options make these wins accessible to utilities and municipalities.
- Outright purchase: Pay once, own the system, and get the biggest long-term savings.
- PPA (Power Purchase Agreement): No upfront cost. SmartCloud finances, builds, owns, and operates the system; the utility pays only for the energy produced at an agreed-upon tariff for the contract term.
- Lease-to-own: Utility makes regular payments (structured to match expected savings); SmartCloud installs, and the utility becomes the owner after the final payment.
Solar keeps taps flowing, frees funds for repairs and expansion, and helps water companies serve communities reliably without breaking the bank.
